Ancient sore oculi
Couldn't see the change
But blissful lights still happen
Through the darkest days
She strokes her hair
In the bathroom sink
It lost volume
It lost the will to give
I gave up
On falling asleep
As the hands began to shove
Before you've even seen it
The old horizon's gone
Another recollection
Of the blind, deaf summer sun.
But eyes are not the be all
And end all of the west
The east may hold a pair now
But maybe just address the doubts you have
There's no great rush to make this change
She showed some sense some time ago
When she was happy
She thought that this would make her happier.
I've told you for the fifth time
I've told you for the twelfth
I'll give up just when you will
You better warn yourself
You'll get left back
In the cold and rain
And now and again
Balancing your roles
I see you get bogged down
And though you say it's not good
Your life still lingers on
And so now, little gosling,
Don't become a swan.
I tried to be so special
And I thought I was alone
I wanted to be special
But I failed us all
So please, now,
Please just trust me
Your life still lingers on
And so now, little gosling
Don't become a swan

So she washed her cut in the sink
And picked up an ulcer along the way
Down to the bay, where I did stay
I was nineteen
And so were we to be beating twenty
Without her clothes
She looked like a leper in the snow
I left her in the snow without her clothes
My movements were slow
Long, she didn't even know
What she was taking away
We didn't talk much
Oh, it must have shown
She must have known
The next day, she never called me again
The day after that, she gave me a call
She was all drunk
Her words came slow
Oh, I didn't even know what I had
I'm taking away

(Peter Thomas): In 1965 Vietnam seemed like just another foreign war
But it wasn't
It was different in many ways
And so were those who did the fighting
In world war two the average age of the combat soldier was 26
In Vietnam he was 19. (Sampling) Inininininin Vietnam he was 19.
(TV-Reporter): The heaviest fighting of the past two weeks
Continued today 25 miles north west of Saigon
(Albert Dobbs): I wasn't really sure what was going on

(Peter Thomas): In Vietnam the combat soldier typically served
A twelve-month tour of duty
But was exposed to hostile fire
Almost every day

(TV-Reporter): In Saigon a U.S. Military spokesman said today
More then 700 enemy troops were killed last week
In that sensitive border area
Through out all of south Vietnam the enemy lost
A total of 2.689 soldiers [Schrei]
(Singing Girl)
All those who remember the war
They won't forget what they've seen
Destruction of men in their prime
Whose average age was 19
//Dedededededede-Destruction//

(Peter Thomas): According to a veterans administration study
Half of the Vietnam combat veterans
Suffer from what psychiatrists call
Post traumatic stress disorder
Many vets complain of alienation, rage or guilt
Some succumb to suicidal thoughts
Eight to ten years after coming home
Almost 800.000 men are still fighting the Vietnam War
(Peter Thomas): None of them recieved a hero's welcome

Is not the age of reason.
I didn't have a reason
For setting you free.
I've seen
A lot of love go sour.
But that's not our love.
You see the problem was
I was only nineteen.
Yeah, I was only nineteen.
Finished up with high school.
Headed for a state school.
Wandered into you.
Big screen
Kissing in a movie.
God, you moved me around.
We got seriously down.
But I was only nineteen.
Chorus:
All I ever wanted to do
Was lie around in bed with you.
I was only nineteen. I was only nineteen.
I was only nineteen. I was only nineteen.
I've seen
A lot of love go bad now.
That's not how our affair
Would've wound up I swear.
But I was only nineteen.
Chorus
I was only nineteen.

Nineteen
The number on his back wore the captain of
the high school football team
Took us all the way to state
Got a scholarship to play down in Tennessee
He could catch he could throw he could run he
could go like you've never seen
Nineteen
But on the day those twin towers came down
his whole world turned around
He told them all I can't play ball there's a war on now
He marched right in with a few good
men and joined the marines
At nineteen
[Chorus]
He's a boy next door
He might of carried your bags at the grocery store
Now he's somebody's son in a hole
with a gun in a foreign land
Trying to hold on to his American dream
At nineteen
There's a sniper out there in the dark
somewhere and a soldier is down
Need someone who can duck and run and get him out somehow
What one good man will raise his hand
and take one for the team
How bout you nineteen?
[Chorus]
He's a boy next door
He might of carried your bags at the grocery store
Now he's somebody's son in a hole
with a gun in a foreign land
Trying to hold on to his American dream
Nineteen Nineteen
Brought him home today with a big
parade down on main street
Gotta Purple Heart and a Silver Star solder gave a speech
Said he could catch he could throw he could
run he's the one that rescued me
...could have played for Tennessee
He was nineteen
He was only nineteen

I felt you in my legs before I ever met you
And when I laid beside you for the first time I told you
I feel you in my heart and I don't even know you
And now we're saying bye
Bye
Bye
And now we're saying bye
Bye
Bye
I was nineteen
Call me
I felt you in my life before I ever thought to
Feel the need to lay it down beside you and tell you
I feel you in my heart and I don't even know you
And now we're saying bye
Bye
Bye
Now we're saying bye
Bye
Bye
I was nineteen
Call me
I was nineteen
Call me
Flew home
Back to where we met
Stayed inside
I was so upset
I cooked up a plan
So good except I was all alone
You were all I had
Love you
You were all mine
Love me
I was yours right
I was yours right
I was nineteen
Call me
(Bye)
(Bye)
I was nineteen
Call me
(Bye)
(Bye)
